CANCELLED: Struggle for Sexual Rights and the Transgender Community

UC ingot   GenderBloc, Student Activities and Leadership Development and the UC Women’s Center unite to invite students to a presentation by Silvia Martinez and Vivian Stromberg of MADRE.

MADRE is an international women's human rights organization that works in partnership with community-based women's organizations worldwide to address issues of peace building, women's health, violence against women, and economic and environmental justice.

The presentation, which will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, in McMicken, room 127, is “Struggle for Sexual Rights and the Transgender Community.”

About the Speakers:
Silvia Martinez,
coordinator of the Trans Network of Nicaragua (REDTRANS)
REDTRANS is part of a regional organization that works to promote respect, security and dignity for transvestite, transsexual and transgendered people and to combat gender and sexual-identity discrimination directed at their communities. Martinez is a transgendered activist who works in communities throughout Nicaragua to build local people’s capacities to advocate for their rights. She participated in a 2007 session of the Organization of American States, where she was one of several activists to present recommendations on behalf the LBTTTGI community to government representatives from countries throughout the Americas.

Vivian Stromberg, executive director of MADRE
Stromberg is an educator and expert on gender, women's economic development, U.S. foreign policy, human rights, sexual violence and child development. Stromberg works in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and the Balkans, and has been an activist in the peace and social justice movements for more than 45 years.
