6418 The Joy of Schubert
Tuesdays, 10:35 a.m. - noon (TUC)

H. L Mencken wrote that Franz Schubert was, to music, "its great heart, as Beethoven was its great mind. In all the history of music there has never been another man of such stupendous natural talents." This course will explore the beautiful music and the fascinating life of Schubert, the most enigmatic and personal of the great composers. We will listen to major works, including songs, symphonies, piano pieces, chamber works, and operas. If possible we will attend a performance of Schubert’s music (optional field trip) and hear guest performers. The course requires no formal musical training--Schubert’s music of heavenly beauty and profound despair still speaks to all listeners.

Moderator: Heather Arden is a retired UC professor who has returned to studying the piano. She is currently engaged in writing a book on Schubert.

2306 Hero/ Heroine's Journey I NEW
